Mima Stamatopoulou Draws a Frog for Everyone Who Follows Her
Mima Stamatopoulou paints personalized frog and toad portraits for her followers, using each one to advocate for endangered amphibians and to reflect back the person who asked for it.

Every frog Mima Stamatopoulou paints belongs to someone. "My greatest inspiration is nature and all its facets, and specifically how we as humans interact with it," she says. "Conserving nature is a big passion of mine, and the vibrancy I see through nature are always important themes in my work. I currently have dedicated myself to drawing frogs and toads for my followers. I do so in order to bring exposure and advocate for these lovely animals, which are largely endangered." The overarching subject stays the same from piece to piece, but the details never do. "It is the exploration of each follower's character and interests through the frog illustrations I create for them that makes each illustration very unique and special."

That instinct traces back to where she grew up. "I lived in rural Greece during my childhood years, and the sunlight, vibrancy of the landscape and rich ecosystems all around are what I fell in love with," she says. "Ever since moving to the UK I have been chasing to find that feeling through my artwork." A move to the Lake District as a teenager deepened it further. "I also got to be surrounded by lots of wildlife, as I resided in the Lake District in my teenage years. This fuelled my passion for wildlife advocacy and allowed me to become more and more educated on environmental issues. My background in music, and the way in which I have always been a polymath with millions of interests, allows me to really connect with my followers' interests and bring them to life in the personalised frog illustrations I create for them."
“I create because I have a voice and I must scream! Through art I am able to claim power and keep refining my skills without the fear of them being stripped away and sold back to me.”

Making art almost entirely for other people, she says, was never a compromise. "Although I largely create for my audience, this brings me joy and is the correct balance for me. I don't see it as a binary," she says. "I get to creatively interpret my followers' interests and personalities and communicate that back to them in a piece of art I created. It's a type of collaboration that is extremely rewarding, and to be able to show my care and compassion through this process means the world to me. Without trying to sound corny, creating for others creates purpose in my life and the ultimate state of happiness, as I am able to spread joy and my message. Feeling aimless is the worst thing for a happy life. If anything, I wish I could thank my followers for all the support and purpose they give to me."

Asked why she creates at all, her answer widens into something closer to a mission statement. "I create as an active stance against passivity and AI amongst other entities. I create because I have a voice and I must scream! Through art I am able to claim power and keep refining my skills without the fear of them being stripped away and sold back to me," she says. "Being an artist is expansive and liberating, as through creating I am constantly learning a plethora of skills and immersing myself in beliefs and cultures. I get to dissect history and the present socioeconomic climate, whilst constantly having the freedom to research and present any topic to my heart's content. It is the most powerful educational tool at my disposal." She has one message for anyone who has been told their mind doesn't work the tidy way the world prefers: "For all those like me who aren't linear thinkers and have been told that they are too disorganised and unfocused, your voice, feelings and message matter. Creating is your superpower and your gift to the world. Keep using it until the day that you die."
